STUDY TRIP 201717887123_1855444734694060_255238775_o

Theme: Towards a peace agreement: Cyprus, Turkey
When: 20th June – 6th July 2017
Where: Cyprus and Turkey
How much: 450 CHF (airplane fare excluded)

In January 2017, the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders of Cyprus entered into a week of intensive talks to reach a peace agreement and to end 43 years of division on the island. Will Cyprus soon be reunited, as the UN, the European Union and the two leaders of the Mediterranean island hope? According to the new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, a consensus seems difficult to find.

As a bridge between three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe, both Cyprus and Turkey have a long and varied history and culture. Due to this location, they have been a trade hub of the world for centuries.

Cyprus gained its independence from Britain in 1960. In 1974, a coup was staged by Greek Cypriot nationalists and the Greek military junta. Their aim was to incorporate Cyprus into Greece. This action led to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. In 1983, a separate Turkish Cypriot state in the north was established by a unilateral declaration. The move of thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots was widely condemned by the international community, with Turkey alone recognizing the new state.

The GIMUN Study Trip 2017 will start in Paphos (Cyprus) and end in Istanbul (Turkey). During our journey, we want to focus on the peace settlement’s mechanism. Who are the actors? What is the role of the EU, the Turkish government and Greece? How is the cohabitation on the island organized? Moreover, we will discover the vestige of the Ottoman Empire.

We will first explore Cyprus and try to understand the revindication of the island. From Paphos to Nicosia, we will meet with IOs, NGOs and activists, to grasp a better understanding of this particular situation. How Nicosia has been bisected into a Greek South and Turkish North with a UN-controlled zone or ‘Green Line’ in between? And more recently, how has Cyprus been affected by Turkey’s failed Coup of 2016?

Crossing the sea by ferry, we will then arrive in Turkey where our focus will shift towards their point of view of the situation. We will dip into the scenery, culture and history of this country, by visiting three cities: Konya, Ankara and Istanbul and beautiful sites such as the Blue Mosque of the Topkapi Palace. Along the theme of reconciliation, the relationship with the EU will be addressed. How can we understand its evolution? What are the interests of a stronger cooperation for both the EU and the Turkish government?

The Study Trip will last 16 days. We are looking for 15 students who want to learn more about theses issues and who are interested in undertaking this cross-cultural experience. The official language will be English.
