MUN Society

Goal

The main purpose of our MUN Society Geneva is to promote further understanding of the United Nations Organisation, international issues, and the global community. The weekly meetings are part of the preparation of delegates for different Model United Nations Conferences in Switzerland and all around the world such as the GIMUN Annual Conference at the Palais des Nations. We would like to help you become familiar with the ways of how such conferences work and want you to gain knowledge, confidence and the necessary skills to actively participate in Model UN meetings of any size.

Why you should participate:

  • MUN society initiates animated debates with the delegates of different countries about current international issues.

  • MUN society will help to develop key skills of negotiation in an international atmosphere.

  • MUN society gives participants the chance to improve their public speaking and communication capabilities.

  • MUN society teaches how to use in a correct manner the rules of procedure of the United Nations.

  • MUN society is a fun way to boost the CV of the participants.

Nature of Participation

In weekly meetings we would like to engage you in an active debate with fellow participants about a topic drawn from the real UN General Assembly (GA). You will represent a country of your choice in a reduced sized, but regionally proportionate, Model UN GA; and learn how to draft, discuss and vote on a resolution in the UN system.

All necessary tools for this exercise will be given to you in due time and we will always try to find an answer to any questions along the way. There is no exam in the end. All those participants who have attended at least four of five meetings and actively took part in the debate will be handed a certificate.

Spring 2013

When?

28th February until May 2nd 2013 (8 sessions), on Thursday :18:00-20:00

Topic

Implementation of universal arms trading regulations to strengthen international security

Description

There's little known about arms trafficking and big parts still seem to be shrouded in mystery due to a lack of reliable data. The consequences of arms trafficking are clear-human suffering, political repression, crime and terror among civilian populations. However little is done to tackle these severe problems at their roots. There are currently no binding global regulations for a responsible trade of arms and against a misuse of weaponry and the latest UN conference on the issue, held in July 2012, remained without solution. MUN society will take up this highly controversial topic in spring semester.
