Gesche Karrenbrock is a legal expert with two state exams in Law (Germany) and Comparative Law (France). She also studied languages and ethnology prior to working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 1980 to 2013. She has experience in humanitarian field work , and fundamental labour law working with the International Labour Office (ILO) from 2013 to 2017.
While working for UNHCR and ILO she travelled to different countries around Asia, Africa and Europe. She was the chief of the Performance Management Unit, deputy director of the Operational Services Division and the Regional Office for Europe at UNHCR respectively. She represented UNHCR in the field in Cameroun, Rwanda, Turkey and until 2013 in the Russian Federation, where she served as a UN Security Officer.
