Why apply for the President or Vice-President position at GIMUN?

GIMUN gives you the opportunity to spend an entire week at the United Nations headquarters, the opportunity to meet people from across the world, and to debate in a highly international atmosphere. GIMUN is one of the largest MUN conferences in Europe that is entirely bilingual in English and French, including interpretation and translations.

If you want the opportunity to use your teambuilding and leadership skills, are passionate about international issues, and have strong communication skills, then you should apply to lead a committee at GIMUN.

Your responsibilities

  • Shared responsibilities: the president and the vice-president co-write the study guide, correct position papers and take turns moderating the debates.
  • Presidents exercise ultimate authority over their respective committees, performing their duties in an equitable and objective manner. The president is responsible for all procedural matters concerning the committee, such as but not limited to moderating the debate, determining and clarifying if necessary the application of rule of procedure.
  • Vice-presidents have authority over all committee support operations and assist the president with all committee relevant matters when in session. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that delegates are representing their countries with respect to substantial issues and topics.

Your privileges

  • Chairing: As President or Vice-president you will join an international team of fellow young leaders and be an essential actor in the success of GIMUN 2018.
  • Fee: The Presidents and Vice-presidents pay a discounted conference fee of 150 CHF (the fee includes all social events, conference materials and lunch vouchers with a total value of 50 CHF).

Conditions for eligibility

  • You must be over the age of 18
  • You must currently be a university student
  • You must be available during the length of the conference and attend all sessions
  • MUN experience will be considered an asset

Fill in this google form with your details and relevant experience, your committee preferences and suggest two topics for your first choice committee explaining why you think they should be debated.

After a review of all applications, you may be invited to a skype interview to discuss your interest and motivation to be a part of GIMUN 2018.

COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS

 United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

Are you highly experienced in MUN and interested in international security? Then the position of President or Vice President of the Security Council is perfectly suited for you!

The Security Council is the most powerful body of the United Nations and during GIMUN, 15 highly skilled delegates will come together for in-depth discussions on important issues such as terrorism and imminent threats to international peace and security. One of the special tasks of President and Vice President is to prepare and coordinate a crisis scenario – if you are creative and able to demonstrate effective leadership, this is the right job for you!

The President must be fluent in English and the Vice President must be fluent in either French or English; working knowledge of both languages would be an advantage.

 

Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Are you interested in economic and social development and aspire to lead a high-quality committee discussing these issues? Then we urge you to apply as President or Vice President of the ECOSOC!

The Economic and Social Council is one of the most important bodies of the United Nations and its broad mandate ranges from sustainable development to arms trade. Your tasks as President or Vice President would include selecting the most relevant topics, conducting in-depth research, and leading the delegates in constructive debates. If you are experienced in MUN and motivated to lead a bilingual committee for a week, then this is the perfect role for you!

The President must be fluent in English and the Vice President must be fluent in either French or English; working knowledge of both languages would be an advantage.

 

Human Rights Council (HRC)

The Human Rights Council is the leading platform in the UN system for the protection and promotion of human rights. If you feel passionate about these issues and want to get more acquainted with the HRC’s mechanisms for defending human rights, don’t hesitate to apply as President or Vice-President of the HRC! This is your chance to experience a highly authentic bilingual simulation and to prepare captivating discussions on diverse human rights topics.

The President must be fluent in English and the Vice President must be fluent in either French or English; working knowledge of both languages would be an advantage.

 

 Arab League

Are you passionate about MUN and interested in issues pertaining to cooperation amongst Arab states, military collaboration and the region’s political development? If yes, apply right now for the position of President or Vice President of the AL at this year’s Annual Conference!

AL is an important regional organization with the aim of achieving greater solidarity between Arab nations, safeguarding sovereignty and advancing common interests among other functions. As President or Vice President, you will have the opportunity to research and select riveting topics for debate and lead a committee of talented delegates.

To apply as President, you must be fluent in English and a working knowledge of French would be an advantage. To apply as Vice President, you must be fluent in either English or French, and a working knowledge of the other language would be an advantage.

 

UN WOMEN

Are you interested in the empowerment of women and their needs worldwide? Do you want to make a difference during the adoption and implementation of global standard for achieving gender equality? Then, do not miss the chance and apply to be a chairperson of UN WOMEN in GIMUN 2018!

Not only does UN WOMEN strive gender equality refer and the protection and promotion of a basic human right but it also examines any social and economic ramifications, with due regard to the Sustainable Development Goals. You can now make a difference for women and girls that stand behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life.

The President must be fluent in English and the Vice-President must be fluent in either French or English; working knowledge of both languages would be a distinct advantage.

 

World Health Organisation (WHO)

Do you have a passion to see a healthier world? Do you believe that health is the cornerstone to a thriving society? Then you should apply to the President or Vice-president position for the WHO!

The WHO is the UN body concerned with ensuring that everyone has the highest standard of health. As President or Vice-president you will have the opportunity to bring together several different disciplines to discuss the determinants of health, with potential topics ranging from diseases, environmental factors, sanitation, social, political and economic factors affecting health and well-being.

The President must be fluent in English and the Vice President must be fluent in either French or English; working knowledge of both languages would be an advantage.
