International UN Day 2017

(application required, see below)

Each year, GIMUN celebrate one of the many United Nations International Days with a half-day conference at the United Nations (Palais des Nations). Last year, the event was organised during the International Migrant Day. The new edition of the International UN Day will this year be organised on Wednesday, May 3rd, for the World Press Freedom Day.

The World Press Freedom Day will take place from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Two guest speakers will talk about the freedom or press worldwide and remind us all the importance of freedom of speech and expression as a key value of the United Nations. The event will be divided in two parts: the first one will be in English and the second one in French.

The purpose of this event is also to give young people the opportunity to express their visions regarding certain topics. GIMUN’s objective for this event is to give young people an opportunity to express their opinion on important issues at the United Nations. It will also allow participants of diverse professional backgrounds and students who are interested in the topic to communicate on the issues at stake. Our aim is to provide an arena for inclusive and respectful discussions among participants.

A representative of Reporters Without Borders will give us an overview of the current state of the freedom of the press in the world. Then, the Executive Director of the Swiss Press Club,
Guy Mettan, will talk about the current press challenges, especially the written press. At the end of each intervention, participants will have the opportunity to interact with the stakeholders.

To apply: send an e-mail to with your first and last name, the name of your university/school before April 27th.
