HRC-Conference with Dr. Kälin as Guestspeaker

Date: 11.10.07
Time: 18:15
Where: IUHEI, Salle AJF
Who: 70-90 students

The first event that the GIMUN has organized in its role as UN-accredited NGO has proven to be a great success! Between 70 and 90 students made it to the HEI and were able to get the view of a real insider. In his presentation, Prof. Kälin shared with us his thoughts about the Human Rights Council a little more than a year after its establishment and pointed out the tasks and challenges ahead.

The image he gave us of the HRC was a different one than we usually get from the press. Without neglecting the shortcomings this new institution is faced with, Prof. Kälin made us also aware of all the things the council has already achieved and often made the comparison with the Human Rights Committee for which Prof. Kälin has worked for a long time as well.

After the presentation, the audience was given the opportunity to ask questions and the students made us of this; the Council’s reaction to the crisis in Myanmar as well as the problem electing member states found their way into the debate that way.

Those who still did not have enough continued the discussion in the cafeteria afterwards and only stopped when the powerful bass-machine announced the upcoming HEI-Party and made it impossible to hear each other’s words.

For the GIMUN, the goal of this event was to introduce our association to a wide variety of students on the one side and give them insights into a very important and on a Swiss initiative –based institution on the other side. We have definitely reached these goals and are looking forward to organise more events to come.

We would like to thank all those who made this event possible, above all Professor Kälin, Mr. Burrin and his team from the HEI and all the volunteers who helped us!

Kaspar Paur (President)
